Description: Topographic map of the area from Wry Hill, Pencarrow Head, Fitzroy Bay, Baring Head, Turakirae Head to Palliser Bay. Some topographic features are described. Named peaks include heights. Some rivers, creeks and streams are named. Fords are marked. Lakes are named. Includes numerous tracks, some graded for ease of access. A bridle track along the beach to Pencarrow Head is marked. Description: Two maps on one sheet. The top map is a fascimile of the chart of New Zealand leg of Abel Tasman's voyage, 1642-1643, reproduced from a copy of the journal of the voyages held at the General State Archives in Hague. The bottom map then compares Tasman's route plotted relative to New Zealand's coastline as it is known today. The map translates the original into English, plots the charted path and adds the dates at given points along the journey. It includes some quotes from Tasman's diary as well as some of the events. The route interpretation along the western shoreline has been researched and compiled by Mr Grahame Anderson. The names on the original chart have been translated and shown on this map in italic script to enable natural features to be compared with those on the chart. Some additional features named subsequent to Tasman's voyage are shown in smaller text to aid identification of the coastline. The Department of Survey and Land Information, in association with the New Zealand Abel Tasman 1992 Commission commemorates Tasman's voyage with this specially drawn present day map. Description: Cadastral map from Cape Egmont south to Moutoti, Taranaki, depicting lands to be sold by the New Zealand Government under the Land Purchase Act 1877, Cape Opunake Blocks XII, I and V. Shows four areas of Native cultivation, a reserve for possible extension of small farm lots, three lots of land reserved at Mr Parris's request (lots 34, 41 and 90), large Maori burial grounds (lots 78 and 87), Rahotu Camp, a cemetery, school site, land reserved for public buildings, Native reserves, recreation reserves and a temporary reserve. Note regarding colour coding on the map and differentiates land to be sold for cash, small farm allotments, village allotments and land for sale on deferred payments or small farm deferred payments. Some handwritten pencil notes on land lots read 'Withheld from sale'. Base Map: 'Cape Survey District & Opunake Survey District' (Wellington: Lands and Survey, 1881). Base map features include site of new whares along Otahi Stream, 'new clearings and new fencing to be destroyed', and 'fenced paddocks on ground felled and burnt last Dec and Jan along Parihaka Road'. Also shows 'new fencing and cultivations felled and burnt last year'. Depicts over sixteen Native reserves of varied sizes. Includes locality map. Map is made up of two main sections, glued to card. Description: Wrongly attributed to Kettle, this Hamilton map attributed to Charles Kettle, of part of the South Island, from Kaikoura southwards and including Stewart Island, (not drawn to scale). Shows harbours, rivers, lakes, Maori tracks, and the southern boundary of the New Zealand Company's land purchase of the Canterbury Region, from Kaiapoi, southwards to Milford Sound and eastwards to Molineux (Molyneux) Bay. Includes descriptive notes on areas of land such as 'very extensive grass plains'. Includes some Maori placenames. Shows Otakou Settlement.
