Smisek, Miroslav, 1925-2013

Czech-born NZ potter. Imprisoned in a German labour camp during World War II. Migrated to Australia following post-war Russian occupation of Czechoslovakia. Worked in Canberra brick works and attended design school. Moved to New Zealand in 1951 where briefly employed at Crown Lynn Potteries. Best known Crown Lynn works are Bohemia ware vases decorated in sgraffito style. Manager of Nelson Brick and Pipe Co. before starting own pottery. Moved to Te Horo and then to Waikanae. Created pottery for Lord of the Rings movie trilogy. See Dominion Post obituaries (Saturday, June 1, 2013, C6).

Description: Interview with Miroslav (Mirek) Smisek who was born in 1925 in Bohemia and migrated to Australia after World War II. Talks about his experience in Czechoslovakia during the German occupation and his imprisonment in a forced labour camp. Mentions the work at the camp, sabotage and escape attempts. Explains leaving the country after the Communist takeover and joining the British Intelligence Service, before travelling to Australia. Decribes living in Canberra and working in the Canberra brick works. Recalls looking for creative value and playing with clay as a child. Explains attending evening classes before attending design school after marriage. Talks about working in a pottery factory, the other Czechs there and making a musical jug that played Waltzing Matilda. Discusses move to Auckland in 1951 and traveling from the North Shore to New Lynn. Describes first job at Crown Lynn mixing clays, then as an assistant to Ernie Shufflebottom, a thrower and turner of pots. Talks about making his first pots and practicing in his lunch time. Discusses his Bohemian Ware and the Scraffito decoration method. Considers Crown Lynn employment a stepping stone. Explains creative ambition caused him to leave after 18 months. Talks about managing the Nelson Brick and Pipe Company and his efforts to extend the production range into pottery. Mentions leaving the Company in 1953 to start his own pottery.
