Son of Kawana Pitiroi Paipai (d 1884). See DNZB (1990, Vol 1, 1769-1869, p 326), correspondent to Donald McLean who wrote mostly from Wellington and was probably from Te Ati Awa or Whanganui iwi. Chief of Putiki, Wanganui. Father of Mrs Charlotte Forsythe (1853-1922). Lived at Tikitiki House (built in 1868). Died in 1920, aged 94 years. See obituary - Observer, 20 Nov 1920, p 6.

Description: Contains (i) a letter and notes in Maori to Elsdon Best from Te Wiki, 22 Apr 1895, Parapara. They describe Te Moa-ki-rua, the moa and Manuteko. Also includes story and song about Aokehu's killing of the taniwha Tutae poroporo; Turaukawa's song "Taku tamaiti ka whano ka wareware koe". Also includes a letter from R E Campbell to S P Smith, 28 Feb 1896, Wanganui, enclosing account of Tutaeporoporo by Hori Kerei Paipai. (ii) A 20-page narrative about Tukorehe and songs from Te Ieti Hoera of Ngati Rahiri with a letter to Elsdon Best, 27 Jun 1894, Waihi. An accompanying note says "All songs copied out. Narrative tells of Tukorehu's journey from Wellington to Waitara and elsewhere" and mentions that the information has been included in S P Smiths history of the Taranaki coast. (iii) Songs collected and written out by Te Ieti, of Te Atiawa, Waitara (5 leaves). These are in Smith's hand with occasional translation notes alongside. Quantity: 1 folder(s).
