Dickerson, Clifton Hendry, -1916

An agent of Karori, Wellington, of the firm of Dickerson & Company, according to Wises Post Office Directory for 1908. He is referred to as C E Dickerson on the title of the Library's plans for alterations and additions to his house, dated 1909, but has signed as C H Dickerson. His house, "Brentwood," was on the corner of Flers Street and Karori Road. Died 15 December 1916, at a private hospital in Wellington, late of Messrs. Edmondson, Dickerson, Dickerson & Co., tweed merchants, aged 49 years.

Description: Includes ground plan, upstairs plan, elevations and sections, details of beaten copper panels, decoration on architrave, leaded glass panels, fireplace decoration. The style of decoration is Arts and Crafts. The architects appear to have mistakenly changed the client's middle initial. Other sources (including his own signature) give his middle initial as H, not E Other Titles - C. H. Dickerson The decorative copper panels shown here were not reproduced exactly in the final execution - see three images in album at PA1-f-29, and other photographs at PAColl-2424, where the panels in the hall feature owls, a Scottish motif in the Arts & Crafts movement. The house "Brentwood" was demolished in about 1979 and the panels sold at Dunbar Sloane's to Malcolm Sheffield who installed them in his Oriental Bay property in the 1990s. Quantity: 3 plan(s). Description: Collection comprises: Photographs of art nouveau joinery designed by Wellington architects, Crichton and McKay, in 1909 for C H Dickerson of `Brentwood,' Karori Wellington. Photographed by Julia Brooke-White for the Alexander Turnbull Library in November 1990. Photographs of Festivals of Pacific Arts 1992, 1996, 2000, 2008, taken by Julia Brooke-White. Prints and negatives for a book, `Every Kitchen tells a Story' written by Clare de Lore, and published by Harper Collins, Auckland, New Zealand, in 2000. Photographs (album, negatives and prints) relating to Raoul Island in the Kermadec Islands and of Department of Conservation volunteers and paid workers, mainly carrying out meteorological observations there, from 1953 to 2003. Includes negatives which show art works which were the basis of a series of wall plaques around the living room walls of the workers' hostel on Raoul Island. Photographs taken 1977-1987 in Fiji including events, boats, buildings, industries, people, and activities. Also includes photographs taken in New Zealand of personalities, Crescent Engineering business, 2003, and Nambassa Festival 1979. Three photographs of of the hall at `Brentwood' taken by Harold Hislop in 1910, and showing this joinery in it original position, can be found in album PA1-f-29, pages 24 and 25. In ca 1979 `Brentwood' was demolished. Joinery installed in 1909 was sold at Dunbar Sloans Auction House soon after. Malcolm Sheffield bought it and installed some of it in his Oriental Bay house in 1990 which is where these photographs were taken. Photographs of Raoul Island were taken while Julia Brooke White was there as a volunteer in 2001, and as a paid worker from 2002 to 2003. Includes photocopies of articles about the Festivals, many of which feature Julia Brooke-White's photographs.
