Hipango, Hori Kingi, 1852-1871

Hipango, George, 1852-1871

Son of Hoani Wiremu Kingi; accompanied Rev Richard Taylor and his wife Caroline Taylor to England, 1867-1871, and died there. Taylor was hoping George would train as a minister of religion. He learned to play the piano while in England and 'some of his etchings in pen and ink were really well done'. Over the winter of 1870-71 he stayed with the Taylors at Portchester (near Portsmouth) where Mary Medley (née Taylor) and her husband Spencer, who was in the Royal Navy, were living. While staying at Litcombe Regis, George (Hori) took ill and died on 29 June 1871. He is buried in the churchyard at St Andrew's, Litcombe Regis, near Wantage, Oxford. The headstone, some 7 feet tall, reads 'Sacred to the memory of George King Hipango, a Maori chief from Wanganui, New Zealand. Died June 29th 1891, aged 19 years. Beneath this ancient yew tree's shade / A young New Zealand chief is laid / From and [sic] kindred far away /The Saviour was his strength and stay / Revealed to him His precious love / And led him to the realms above' (Information from Randall Springer, Wanganui, from the diary of Richard Taylor, pers. comm and letter AT13/14/1, 4 December 1992 - copy in Artists' file)
