Brough, Jonathan, 1839-1927

Contractor & naturalist. Born in England, worked for some years on goldfields of Victoria & Western Australia. Went to Nelson in 1866 & spent several years prospecting for gold on the West Coast. By the 1880s was doing road works in the back country around Nelson. He corresponded with Walter Lawry Buller detailing his observations of bird life, flora & fauna. In 1899 he supervised the construction of the road between Elmslie Bay & French Pass. He married Anne Taylor (died 1931 aged 85) & they had 3 children (Jonathan Taylor, Dinah May & Anne Zella).
