Fraser, Alex, 1800-1868, Frazer, Alexander, 1800-1868

Wellington and Otago runholder and trader. Twin of Thomas Fraser (1800-1871), born in Scotland. The brothers came to Sydney in 1830 under engagement to Messrs Tooth, for whom they worked. In 1837 they came to Kapiti as traders. In 1839 they arranged with Te Rangihaeata to use Mana Island as a base for their whaling and trading. Their schooner `Twins' traded with the East Coast Māori and called regularly at Ahuriri. They also traded with the Taranaki tribes and with the South Island. In the 1860s they added `SS Wallabi' to their fleet. The Frasers also ran sheep on Mana Island and in 1840s they bought runs at Taita and Porirua. In 1853, following Kettle's survey, the brothers took up land in Otago. Died in October 1868 at Ghuznee Street, Wellington, aged 68 years. Buried in the family plot, with his twin brother and sister, at Sydney Street Cemetery, Wellington. (An Encyclopaedia of New Zealand, Vol 1, p 747-748)
