Description: Shows William and Anna (nee Fife) Bishop seated in the front garden of their new house. The house has a curved driveway and front lawn with flower beds round the lawn, beside the drive and in front of the house. There are hills and large trees behind the house. The house may be in Nile Street, Nelson, rather than the Maitai Valley. William Bishop and Anna (nee Fife) were married in September 1844 (see TL 3/1/1, 29 April 1981). They owned land in the Maitai Valley, but are not known to have built there. A family member (Clemency Bryant, visited 22/5/2000) suggests this scene may be in Nile Street, Nelson, where the couple had a home. However the closeness and size of the hills behind may not fit with this suggestion. Supplied title. Artist attributed on stylistic grounds. Reproduced in Murray-Oliver, A.A.St C. M. "Charles Heaphy; a portfolio...ChCh: Avon, 1981. Other Titles - Garden scene Quantity: 1 watercolour(s). Physical Description: Watercolour 244 x 321 mm Provenance: Passed by descent from William Bishop, grandfather of the donor, Miss Helen Nicholls Processing information: Formerly filed under: Artist unknown.
