Public opinion on Tuku Morgan's behaviour. Maori bashing continues over Tuku Morgan, as Maori hit themselves and ask why he just doesn't resign. Maori occupy land in Waiouru during winter as temperatures hit a low. They are protesting against the wild horse mustering? Winston Peter's accepts Tuku Morgan's apology and assumes the moral high ground. International study shows kiwi kids poor at maths but good at bullying. Bob Jones suggests that the Beehive be dynamited. A look at genetic makeup in terms of race. Comment on teacher inaction over bullying in school play grounds. Description: Brian O'Brien was born in Christchurch in 1944 and grew up there. Describes a traditional Catholic upbringing including attitudes to discipline, religion, alcohol, women and sex. Began public service career in 1963 as a clerk with NZ Electricity Department. Joined Forest Service as a clerk in 1966. Remained in administrative positions in various district and conservancy offices until taking voluntary severance from NZ Forest Service in 1987. Prior to leaving Forest Service was Assistant Conservator of Forests (Administration), NZ Forest Service, Palmerston North. Comments on the closeness of forestry villages and the fairly closed world that they represented. Talks about racial integration and politics in the Forestry Service. Mentions the McLean Report (by Ian McLean), 1978 and its proposals for the Service. Describes the levels of administration (Forest rangers; Conservancy/district; Headquarters) and relationship between conservancies and Head Office. Talks about conservators' work. Describes the expectation that the Forest Service would employ the unemployed. Comments on the role of the Forest Service in the community particularly in the 1960s and 1970s. Description: Esme Kissock was born at Stanthorpe, Queensland on 6 May 1936. Describes growing up in Australia where she worked eleven years as a nurse. Recalls coming to New Zealand on a working holiday and meeting and marrying Alan Kissock, a Kawerau forester, in 1965. Describes living in and around Edgecumbe since then. Talks about involvement in voluntary work including work with the CAB, Playcentre, church and hospice movement. Gives details of the earthquake, the return home of her family and the reaction of her daughter. Comments on water supply and the fear that the Matahina dam would collapse. Talks about the way in which Maori and Pakeha coped. Describes the work of Civil Defence. Recalls her involvement in establishing a programme for children to do painting as therapy. Comments on the feeling of the community pulling together which gave way, over a period of time, to frustration at the slowness of rectifying some things.
