Description: The papers relate to Mitchell's activity in the Communist Party, Socialist Unity Party, various trade unions and in industrial disputes such as the 1951 waterfront strike. Tapes of interviews with Mitchell by Doug Crosado have been transferred to the Oral History Centre. Nearly all papers relating to Mitchell's involvement with local politics in Freemans Bay, Auckland, have been deposited with the Auckland Institute and Museum. Description: Fuzz Barnes was born in Lyttelton 12 August 1902. Recalls her father, an engineer, and his jobs on a Cook Strait ferry and at the Porirua Mental Hospital. Talks about her mother's education and needlework skills. Recalls memories of home in Porirua, chores and her siblings. Discusses Sunday School, the importance of family and their Auckland home. Talks about secondary education at Wellington Girls College and Auckland Girls Grammar. Discusses her decision to study law and mentions Geraldine Mario Heimus and Ellen Melville. Mentions that she was the fourth woman to be admitted to the Bar. Talks about her position at the law firm Nuemegen and Mowlem while studying, promotions and prejudices toward female law students, a lecturer Mr Hogben and the ten years it took to complete her degree. Describes meeting her husband Jock Barnes in 1926, his job as a draughtsman, studies in politics and Labour Party involvement. Recalls giving up work to have a family, Jock's sacking from the Lands and Survey Department and their appeal against it. Describes the difficult times they had during the Depression due to Jock's political activity, his job on the Auckland wharves and his promotion to President in 1943. Discusses working for Bob Fawcett, a union solicitor, from 1939 to 1946. Talks about their children and the family's Richmond Road house. Discusses her brother's experience of World War 2 and Jock's involvement with conscientious objectors. Discusses her view of activism and peace in New Zealand and her involvement with the trade union movement and the Watersider's Union. Talks about being on the executive of the women's branch of the Labour Party and her retirement. Describes working for W.T. Anderton, later MP for Eden, being a Justice of the Peace and the Ladies Committee of the Auckland Watersider's Silver Band. Describes the buildup to the 1951 waterfront strike, the Combined Women's Committee, the 151 day strike and the support they received. Discusses in detail the wharfies march up Queen Street, being arrested and fined and Jock Barnes court case after the march. Describes his imprisonment on a charge of criminal libel, work with his son Bill in their drainlaying firm and their separation.
