Description: Elsie Stevenson, born and grew up in a close knit rural community in Omakau, Central Otago. Her parents were farmers. Elsie left school with Proficiency, not wanting to go to High School. She worked on the farm for a number of years but didn't want to be a farmer. In 1929 she married a railway worker and moved to Southland. However as a result of her husband's accident on the railway they eventually returned to Omakau and took up farming. Both Elsie and her husband (and later second husband) ran the farm. They had two children Shirley and Don. After retiring from farming Elsie looked after her parents for a number of years until the passed away - she then moved to Omakau. Interview with Rose Grant

Description: Rose speaks of her isolated rural upbringing near the small community of Glenorchy at the head of Lake Wakatipu. She has spent her whole life in this area and still lives in the family home that her parents moved to when she was about 10 years old. her working life has focused on farming. Unpaid jobs involved mainly rabbiting, milking and feeding the stock. She recalls the history of tourism, mining and timber milling in the Glenorchy area. Speaks of farming today and of raising 140 sheep and 20 cattle not to mention her main friends - 20 cats. Single handedly she keeps the family property running and thrives on life, simply living off the land, with a grand respect for nature. Interview with Vera Burnside

Description: Vera Burnside was the only daughter of Adam and Jane King who farmed near Balclutha. She had three brothers. She attended Stoney Creek School until age 14 and then helped her mother at home on the farm. In 1928 Vera married Thomas Burnside, an Irishman. They then moved onto a farm at Pukekoma - they had five children. Throughout her life Vera has been involved in many community activities - in particular the Women's Division of Federated Farmers and the Presbyterian Church. Her children continued involvement in community activities. Vera now resides in Holmdene Aged Care Home. Interview with Betty Drake

Description: Miss Drake was a successful high country farmer, who inherited the family property "Run 51" on Waitahuna Heights, which is now incorporated in the Waipori Forest. Despite her well-to-do background, from her earliest years Miss Drake had been determined to earn her living on the farm and eventually her father accepted the situation and she worked her way up to become manager, and later owner, of the property. She reject marriage, preferring to earn her own living and keep her independence. Her assertiveness, unconventional attitudes and forcibly expressed opinions feature on the tape. She has lived all her life in the Waipori area apart from a brief period in England in her youth, of which she gives interesting vignettes. In retirement, Miss Drake created a garden and takes active interest in promoting animal welfare and SPCA. Description: Elizabeth Ross was the second eldest child of William and Anne Ross. The family owned a farm outside Balclutha. In this interview she recalls her childhood and growing up in a small rural community and the impact of national and international events - eg. World War I and II, and the 1930s Depression - on both her own family and the local community. Elizabeth survived her parents and older brother, remaining in Warepa to manage the farm with her younger brother and sister until their retirement in Dunedin. Description: Interview with Valerie Le Lievre (nee Beeby), born in Timaru in 1948. Talks about her family background, growing up in Timaru and then on the family farm at Orari. Mentions house cows, a cream separator, and her mother cooking on a coal range. Refers to biking to primary school, pet days, garden clubs, tennis, table tennis, and Sunday school. Discusses attending Geraldine High School, liking science and maths, and playing netball, hockey, table tennis and softball. Comments on getting her driving licence when she was 15. Refers to working in a bank for three years after leaving school until she married Barry Le Lievre, a builder who later returned to the family farm. Mentions their daughters, and sewing when they were young. Recalls community groups in Geraldine she was involved with - Church Fireside Group, Camera Club and Historical Society. Describes the farm at Winchmore they bought in 1979, crops, sheep and cattle, machinery and her farm bikes. Talks about working as a team with her husband and doing the book work which they computerised. Mentions community involvements at Lyndhurst including Home and School as secretary/treasurer, the Hall committee, Ashburton Organ Club, Methven Garden Club and Mid Canterbury Family History Group. Refers to moving to Ashburton when her husband died in 2001, and talks about her grandchildren. Recalls being invited to join the Lyndhurst Country Women' Institute (CWI) through a school contact and enjoying it. Discusses speakers at meetings, craft nights, competitions, and supporting Templeton Hospital patients and Ashburton IHC. Comments on being treasurer and secretary, and on the Mid Canterbury Federation of CWI. Mentions being on the Methven A & P Show committee and helping with CWI displays. Refers to the Lyndhurst CWI gradually becoming just a social club with most of the final members of Lyndhurst CWI living away from Lyndhurst. Talks briefly about the Lyndhurst CWI 70th anniversary and closing ceremony. Comments on her continuing friendships with CWI members. Refers to joining Rural Women [New Zealand] at Winchmore (formerly WDFF) when the Institute was closing and finding it more political than the CWI. Reflects on the importance to her of the Lyndhurst CWI.
