Horokiri Valley was fortified for a relatively brief period, from 1843 until the early 1850s. The location of the scene depicted is the military housing inside old Pahautanui Pa site after 1846. Description: Papers contain (i) letters from Charles Maxwell in Bristol to his wife, Kate in Bath, 1827-1828; (ii) letters from John Seale Bird to his sister, Lady Maxwell and his brother-in-law, Sir Charles Maxwell 1842-1849. The letters describe Bird's experience as a colonist in Wellington, noting the poor economic conditions in the settlement and the unease caused by unrest among the Maori population and (iii) papers collected by Robin Gwynn containing biographical detals about Bird and James and Kate Maxwell, 1977 Charles Maxwell was an officer in the British Army and his wife Kate was the sister of John Seale Bird. Bird emigrated with his wife to New Zealand aboard the `Thomas Sparks' in 1842. After a troubled voyage he attempted to establish himself as a settler in Wellington. A lack of capital combined with the the poor economic state of the settlement and the unrest among the Maori population persuaded Bird to try his luck in California in 1849.
