Description: A studio portrait showing a group of two men Teone Taare Tikao and Hoani Matiu (standing); and two women possibly Hera (Sarah) Te Wahia nee Antoni, and Hana Maaka. They are all wearing traditional clothing including feather cloaks. Each holds a weapon: two taiaha, a tewhatewha and a mere. There are other images in the same series at Te Papa which date the image to 1896. A researcher previously identified Tikao as Hoani Maaka saying it was a "Group of Kai Tahu tipuna from Purakaunui and Puketeraki identified as Hoani and Hana Maaka, Hoani Matiu and Hera Te Wahia' (Email from Otago Museum, 6 April 2011). Earlier personal communication from a researcher identified Tikao as Hori Kerei Taiaroa MP for Southern Maori. This correspondent suggested the 1899 date. There are in existence several other photographs of this group or individuals. Other Titles - Maori Quantity: 1 b&w photo-mechanical print(s) on postcard in album.. Physical Description: Photolithograph, 139 x 84 mm. Provenance: Donated by Mrs A S Brabin in 1980.
