Gregory, (Mr), 1913-2004, Reithmaier, G, 1913-2004, Riethmaier, Gregory, 1913-2004

German-born photographer and traveller. Became naturalized New Zealander after World War II when he was interned as an enemy alien. Began a photography business in Northcote, Auckland, known as Mr Gregory, then later joined the National Publicity Studios as a photographer where he became senior photographer until his retirement. Author of "Rebecca and the Maoris" and photographic publications on Auckland and Samoa. Died aged 90. (See Last Word (Weekend Herald, A26))

Description: Part One of Reithmaier's memoirs containing an account of his childhood and youth in Germany where he worked for the Post Office, his voyage as wireless operator aboard the 'Seeteufel' commanded by Count Felix Luckner, outward bound from Hamburg, April 1937 until February 1938 when Riethmaier left the ship in New Zealand, his impressions of Auckland where he worked as a steward, 1938-1939 and a description of his internment on Somes Island, 1939-1945 Accompanied by a photocopy of a letter Riethmaier sent to Maurice Gee commenting on the depiction of Germans internees on Somes Island during World War Two in his novel 'Live bodies', 5 Jul 1998.
