Dunedin artist, who was trained in England, his place of birth. His birth is recorded at Westminster, 5 November 1851, the son of Edward Brown Wilson, civil engineer, and Mary Jane Wilson. He came to New Zealand by 1877, when he was recorded in Auckland; in Oamaru by 1878; may have bought a farm in Canterbury; in Dunedin by 1884. He painted in oils and watercolours and taught art in Dunedin. In 1904, left Dunedin for Melbourne and eventually returned to England.

The signature and style is that of L W Wilson, although the signature appears to read I W Wilson. The Alexander Turnbull Library holds the original watercolour for one reproduction, the view of Lake Manapouri (reference number A-123-002). It also holds second copies of several other reproductions, 5 with a separate printed portfolio cover titled 'New Zealand scenery. From water colour drawings by L W Wilson Esq. S and W Mackay, booksellers, Wellington'(reference number A-192-018/022). The portfolio-style cover with the latter group includes cotton ties opposite a spine binding, suggesting that the reproductions were unbound. Dating: Wilson left New Zealand in 1904. He probably had these copies made before leaving. The view of Manawatu Gorge was also published as a postcard. The Library holds a copy at E-279-160 sent in 1906. Title supplied by Library.
