Son of John Deans (1820-1854), born at Riccarton and educated in Christchurch. Qualified as a lawyer but took over management of his father's estate and was active in local organisations (Scholefield, DNZB, p 199); wrote to Sir John Hall and William Rolleston from Riccarton
