Description: Eric George Laing Paterson. As a young man Eric was a member of the Lyall Bay Surf Club. He was a champion swimmer who in 1920 held the New Zealand record for swimming 100 yards in 60 seconds. At about the same time he was nominated as a New Zealand rep. for the Olympic Games. He was a master of and one of the first New Zealanders to use the six beat crawl swimming style. As an adult he worked as an accountant with Inland Revenue, Wellington, eventually becoming chief accountant. He retired from his job in 1967. Eric married Florence Ivy Sunnex on the first of August 1928. Eric had a brother, Harold and a sister Maisie.
