Description: The upper engraving is a scene from The Beggar's Opera. It shows the characters drawn with the heads of different animals on a stage. Polly as a cat, Lucy as a sow, Macheath as an ass, Lockit and Mr & Mrs Peachum as an ox, dog and an owl. Several noblemen appear on the stage conducting the chief female singer forward. Harmony is flying in th air. Musicians are playing various instruments in the foreground. The lower engraving shows a theatre stage with three theatre managers in the centre talking about the future plays. They play with puppets on the table and on a mini stage. Ben Jonson's ghost rises up from beneath the stage with a candle. Above the heads of the managers are nooses. On the right is a man already hanging from a rope. Hogarth has depicted the managers as criminals who should be hanged for offending the public with their productions. Sub-text below the image : `This print represents the rehearsing of a new farce that will include two famous entertainments Dr Faustus & Harlequin Shepherd to which will be added Scaramouch Jack Hall the chimney-sweeper's escape from Newgate through the privy with the comical humours of Ben Johnson's ghost concluding with the hay-dance performed in the air by the figures A.B.C. assisted by ropes by the muses'.
