Description: Shows crowd of ghostly soldiers on seaside slope at right, overlooking gentle waves breaking under clouded moonlight. The work represents the ghosts of New Zealand soldiers killed on the Belgian coast. The original oil painting was painted in 1934, and was purchased by Lord Wakefield of Hythe, and presented to the New Zealand Government. It hung in the National Art Gallery for many years. It is now held in National Archives, War History Collection. The chromolithograph was produced ca 1935, and copies hung in most New Zealand schools until the Second World War. Extended Title - from the original presented to the people of New Zealand by Lord Wakefield of Hythe. Inscriptions: Recto - bottom right - (Signature in pencil): W Longstaff; Recto - bottom right - [Imprint statement]; Recto - beneath image - This reproduction was also presented to be sold in aid of New Zealand War Charities.
