Group

5 Trusts, estates, papers deposited for safe keeping

Date: 1860-1939

From: Levin & Company Ltd : Records

Reference: Series-2352

Description: This series is dominated by the James McKelvie papers - personal, 1860-1892, and estate, 1892- . These provide much source material for the Rangitikei of the type found in the Series 3 Legal Documents. Although McKelvie obviously did not lend money casually, he was prepared to invest widely throughout the area and his inward correspondence suggests prospective mortgagors and small men `in trouble' had no hestitation in approaching him directly. Other sections include: John Bridges, Wellington Manager for the Bank of New Zealand. These papers contain much Wairarapa material, especially the opening up of the Opaki Plain area, 1864-1875; also Carnarvon in the Manawatu, 1871-1882. James Coutts Crawford - Other Crawford trusts. These contain a handful of papers on whaling along with much useful material on the development of Wellington East. Charles Augustus Vallance, Tawanui Station, South Wairarapa, 1839-1862. A remarkable group of papers in the quality of Vallance's own letters home, 1843-1849, to scraps on whaling at Okiwi and Te Kopi, a single letter from Edward Jerningham Wakefield, and such reflections of his domesticity as invoices from Mary Taylor. Also includes papers relating to the following estates: J T Dalrymple; Donald Drummond; Duncan Cameron and Donald Thomas Cameron (Glendhu Station, Hinakura), 1890-1937; Maggie Graham; Captain Hugh Levin; Major Lionel Levin, Arthur Herbert Macartney, Ceylon. The series covers the period 1860-1939. See Series 10 for papers relating to the W H Levin Estate Quantity: 196 folder(s).
