Description: Pamphlet shows on one side a colourful scene of the Italian countryside on either side of the Po River, with the towns of Cremona, Brescia, Mantova, Verona, Padova, Rovigo, Modena and Ferrara, and in the right foreground a smiling young woman holding a large basket of grapes and oranges. The other side shows a black and white illustration of a laughing skeleton wading in the Po River with a wrecked bridge in the background, and soldiers on boats being attacked and killed by enemy shell fire. Artist identified as Heinz Fehling, by public feedback, in 2017. Inscriptions: Recto - F [Artist's initial] Historical notes are based on a letter from the donor, Ivan Whyle; a copy of the letter is housed with smaller propaganda posters at Eph-A-WAR-WII-Propaganda-Italy. Both the Senio and the Po Rivers were crossed in April 1945. Quantity: 1 colour photo-mechanical print(s). Physical Description: Offset print on two sides of pamphlet, 203 x 295 mm. Provenance: Donated by Mr Ivan Whyle, of Auckland, in 1990. Mr Whyle was a member of the 12th Platoon, B Company, 24th New Zealand Infantry Battalion.

Description: Mohi Manukau was born in 1912 between Ruawai and Matakohe. Talks about being a Ratana Apostle (Minister) and mentions that his grandfather Maurice Rogan built the local Ratana church with Mr Stirling. Mentions his grandfather was a gumdigger. Discusses the carting of gum by bullock team to Joe Stirling's store at Matakohe. Discusses how young boys were selected to be trained in Maori lore. Describes the special building in which they were given this training. Explains that the Kaipara area is divided in two with the northern (Poutu) half connected to Te Uraohau and the South Head area connected to Te Waiahua. Mentions the Aotea Block. Discusses the meaning of Ngati Whatua and briefly gives the origins of land ownership disputes. Describes early Maori gardens and the growing of kumara. Mentions the eating of kiore (rat), frogs, snails and eels. Comments on Maori housing and the distance from secondary schooling. Recalls becoming an overseer with Public Works and involvement in World War I rehabilitation land and housing. Describes joining the 24th Battalion in World War II, planting the Army garden at Maunu and being sent to be an overseer on Public Works roads. Talks about going to the Kaiapara Dairy Factory in 1948, settling at Haranui and the gradual improvement of the marae there. Talks about recent intermarriage between Kakanui and Haranui. Description: During 1942 Barling was stationed in Egypt where he undertook various courses including officer training, graduating as a second lieutenant. In January 1943 he rejoined 24 Battalion at the front in Libya and was killed in action in the vacinity of Tebaga Gap, Tunusia on 26 March 1943. The letters cover the period 16 December 1941-17 March 1943 and contain a detailed account of his experiences during this period including his views on army life and his impressions of places he visited including Cairo, Beirut, and Tripoli. The letters are accompanied by poems Barling wrote while on active service. Barling served in North Africa with 24 Battalion and was killed in action in Tunisia, March 1943.
