Waiorongomai Station

Wairongomai Station

Matthews family property, Featherston. Original large wooden house was two-storeyed with verandahs on both floors, with 27 rooms. This house was demolished in 1927 as it was aging, and the then owner (Raymond Matthews) had a real fear of fire, and families were smaller. A smaller house was built nearby in 1920, built to last. This was known for many years as "Waianiwa" ("Rainbow waters"), but now know as "Waiorongomai". See panoramic photographs of both houses taken in 1923 by Robert Percy Moore (Pan-0249 and Pan-0250). Another house, using some of the old timber was built in 1927 on the site of the old house and was named "Ratanui".
