Runholder, Waiorongomai Station, Featherston; and Chairman of the South Wairarapa River Board. Son of Charles and Elizabeth Matthews. Married his second cousin Hannah Matthews, daughter of Alfred Matthews and Mary Ann Legg, in 1869.
