Eastman, David, -1973?

Artist of Wellington. Two of his paintings "Eternal Fall" and "Free Love and Contraceptives" were alleged to be indecent and were the subject of a court hearing in 1967 - see Art Newspaper Clippings, Vol 1, p. 22. See also "The Dominion" May 22 1972 "Artist strips to Open Exhibition" and "The Evening Post" May 24 1972, re the controversial opening of an exhibition of Eastman's work at Antipodes Gallery, Wellington. Eastman was described as "a young painter of pop-Ingres nudes" by Patrick AE Hutchings in "Young Contemporary New Zealand Realists" in Art International, v.17 no. 3 March 1973. A copy of the catalogue of this exhibition is held in Art Ephemera, 1972. Eastman died not long after this exhibition.

Description: Cartoon by Ronald Edwin Kennedy depicting Wellington artist David Eastman painting at an easel with a brush and palette. He is naked apart from wearing one sock which holds two paint brushes and turns to a woman standing next to him and says "Of course I'll paint you in the nude but for others save your blushes - I always wear at least one sock in which to keep my brushes". Two newspaper clippings are glued under the caption and surrounded by frames as if they are paintings. The first reads "Wellington artist David Eastman did his own swinging thing when he opened an exhibition of his own paintings in Wellington at the weekend..." and the second reads "Stripped to his underpants, he performed a dance to spring, unveiled his Christ and then shed his underpants".
