Description: The Cusack Smith papers are a comprehensive collection of material describing life and events in colonial Samoa as well as in rural Essex. The diaries contain photographs and descriptions of the interiors and gardens of private houses. The daily entries describe diet and social/family activites such as fives, polo and boating. They also include numerous works of art by members of the Cusack Smith family as well as their guests. Although the collection does not record major diplomatic or political events it does present an important social history of Samoa which would otherwise remain obscured.
