Material relating to Arthur Aris King includes a series of newspaper articles by Custos (Thomas Trood), G E L Westbrook and by Spectator (possibly Trood or King), a collection of clippings about Robert Louis Stevenson, photocopies of school work and personal papers relating to Mary Vakanielato and papers relating to King, Samoa and the Pacific; `James Baxter Fleck, 1867-1939' in which Hunt remembers her father's life (2000) and `Reminiscences, Susana and Kingi' in which Hunt records stories she remembers for their descendants (2003). Other material relating to James Baxter Fleck includes manuscripts and research materials, publications, and a series of Samoan postcards. The publications are titled `Samoa 1917, Dear Mr Best: letters written 1917-19, from Pte James Baxter Fleck, Samoa Relief Force, to Elsdon Best, ethnologist, Dominion Museum, Wellington, New Zealand' assembled by Alice Hunt with additional commentary and a description of the geology of the Islands of Samoa by Dr Clel Wallace. Description: The Cusack Smith papers are a comprehensive collection of material describing life and events in colonial Samoa as well as in rural Essex. The diaries contain photographs and descriptions of the interiors and gardens of private houses. The daily entries describe diet and social/family activites such as fives, polo and boating. They also include numerous works of art by members of the Cusack Smith family as well as their guests. Although the collection does not record major diplomatic or political events it does present an important social history of Samoa which would otherwise remain obscured. Cusack Smith's official despatches can be found among the Samoa Record Group Papers at the National Archives of New Zealand in Wellington.
