Discusses early expeditions to outlying islands with Wilson, Stead and Buddle, the discovery of the Chatham Island robin, causes of its decline, Government rescue, the study of the robin population in New Zealand and the role of Alan Wutherspoon. Describes how interest began in the cicada, how sounds were worked out, recording them, the spread of species and the work of Tom Grant Taylor. Describes expeditions to collect specimens in the South Island, specimens from the Correspondence School, the identification of more species and John Dugdale's work. Description: Album of newspaper & magazine cuttings, black & white photographs, coloured illustrations, and written information about New Zealand fauna. Mostly on various birds of New Zealand including different varieties of birds of prey, perching birds (e.g. stitch-bird or hihi, tui, kingfisher or kotare, bell-bird or korimako), kakapo, kaka, kiwi, kuku (or wood-pigeon); penguins, shags, gannets etc. Other sections include illustrations and written information about the tuatara, whitebait (or inanga), New Zealand fish, New Zealand insects and butterflies, and 7 pages of musical notes (p 45-51) indicating the different sounds made by various types of cicada. There are several articles about William Herbert Guthrie-Smith, written after his death in 1940.

Description: Transparency slides of Australia selected by Mr Williams as a representative collection to be used in a series of lectures on his return to England. This sheet shows Australian plants and insects; a view of the Royal Botanical Gardens in Sydney; the ship Monowai leaving Sydney Harbour; views of the Taronga Park Zoo including giraffes, crocodiles, kangaroos, black swans and a koala; the Sydney observatory; further views of Sydney Harbour including Darling Harbour and the Sydney Heads, Manly from the sea, and the Harbour Bridge. The last two images show the Cotter Reservoir and the Cotter Dam near Canberra. The slides are not filed in his original numerical sequence, and are selected by subject relating to particular talks. Arrangement: These slides were selected by Mr Williams from his original sequence to create a representative collection of Australian images which he used in illustrated lectures on his return to England.
