Civil Engineer, businessman and politician. Arrived in Otago 1869. District engineer for Otago Province 1872-1876. Involved in railway development in NZ and Australia, and with stock and station agencies. Member of Parliament for Wakatipu 1881-1893. Minister of Justice and Defence 1887-1889, and for Public Works and Mines 1889-1891. Fergus was married twice, to Letitia McKay in 1874 and then to Margaret McGregor Reid in 1878.
