Description: Shows British yacht with four sails, amongst nine waka, four of them with single sails erected. Dating: W E and F Newton, opticians and globe makers, were located at 3 Fleet Street (the address printed on the wooden frame) between 1852 and 1857 Other Titles - Expedition on its way to Tauranga in 1833. New Zealand war expedition. Inscriptions: Verso - (Embossed on frame at left and right of image): W.E. & F. Newton / OPTICIANS / & GlobeMakers / TO THE QUEEN / 3 Fleet St Temple Bar / LONDON; (Number in ink on frame): 55 Almost identical to engraving entitled: "New Zealand War expedition", published in Church Missionary Quarterly papers, no. LXXVII, Lady Day, 1835; from an original drawing by Henry Williams: "Expedition on its way to Tauranga in 1833". Quantity: 1 curio(s). Description: Shows missionary settlement at Rangihoua, Bay of Islands. After an almost identical image (which however has 2 larger sailing ships in the foreground) "Church missionary settlement at Rangihoua, N.Z.", published in Church Missionary Quarterly Papers, midsummer 1832, no. 66, cover page; and, "[Missionary settlement at Rangihoua on the North side of the Bay of Islands c.1830]", an oil painting in the Rex Nan Kivell collection. This latter also features two vessels in foreground sea. Description: Shows a group of Maori seated or standing on rocks on the shore. There is a cliff-like headland in the middle distance on the right, and a sailing ship and small settlement can be seen in the left background. First published in 1843, and republished in 1849. Same image published in Colonial intelligencer or Aborigines' friend. William Colenso was New Zealand's first printer, working at Paihia at the Bay of Islands from 1835. He began work as a printer in 1833 in England and is likely to have brought this typeface with him when he came to New Zealand in 1834. Quantity: 1 b&w art print(s) on page of periodical.. Description: A group of war canoes racing, some with sails. In the centre of the group is the missionary schooner, Karere, flying a red and blue ensign. A headland is in the background. Reprinted in the Quarterly papers of the Church Missionary Society in 1849. The image was also used to illustrate Rev. William Yate's 'An account of New Zealand' (London, 1835) opp. p. 184, with title The mission boat accompanying a New Zealand war expedition. Engraved by S. Williams. Description: Shows a head and shoulders view of Edward Parry, also known as Eruera Pare Hongi. dressed in a kahu kurī (dogskin cloak) over European clothing.
