The 2015 accession includes the originals of the photocopied diaries, a letter to his father, speech notes on Anzac Day and a typed transcript of his diaries. Source of title - Supplied by Library Harcourt entered camp in June 1916 and sailed from New Zealand on the ship 'Tofua' with reinforcements for the New Zealand Expeditionary Force on 26 April 1917. He landed at Plymouth on 19 July and undertook training at Sling Camp. Description: Papers relating to World War One - comprised of two soldier's pay books, a postcard and a telegram - from the period 1915 to 1919. Mainly relating to the Williams family. Two pay books of James Neil Williams (Service Number 7/1928), who enlisted at the age of 25 in 1915 and served with the 8th Reinforcements and 14th Battery Squad, New Zealand Field Artillery. The first pay book ('Soldier's Pay Book for use on Active Service'), covers the period from September 1915 at Trentham, the voyage on troopship 36 (HMNZT 36) to Alexandria and from there to a military camp at Zeitoun, Egypt. Followed by voyage on the HMS 'Menominee' to Le Havre and the camp at Sanvic, France, and concludes after a period in the field in December 1916. The second pay book was issued in London on 29 May 1918 and covers the period spent at Walton-on-Thames, embarkation and return to New Zealand, ending in August 1919. Postcard addressed to "Cora and Charlie" from HMNZT No 19 at sea on 25 March 1915 and signed "Bob". The message makes reference to "a great day in Colombo" and states "We land at Suez tomorrow but do not know where we go after that." Postcard image shows an unidentified ship and island. Telegram from Sir James Allen, New Zealand Minister of Defence, received at 'New Zealand Post Office Telegraphs' office at Petone on 2 October 1918, with message of sympathy regarding the hospital admission of Stanley Horace Williams in England, and sends hopes for "a speedy recovery". Collins' "New Zealand" Pocket Diary for 1915

Description: Diary with entries for the period 28 June to 31 December 1915. Volume prefaced with note describing the complete sequence of five volumes for the period "from 1st July 1915 to 9th Sept 1919" and on page for 1 May: "Dedication. To my comrades who in the Eastern land of sin sand sun and soldiers sorrows were good to me." In the first entry Jackson notes: "Last week after many failures I managed to get passed by a Doctor as 'medically fit' and also got into the Sixth Rfs [reinforcements] at the same time", and goes on to say "I would only have been too pleased to go to the war sooner but must say 'better late than never', & let it go at that." Diary describes enlistment, time spent at Addington, before travelling to Timaru, and again by railway back to Christchurch, and then on board the Wahine at Lyttelton bound for Wellington. On arrival in Wellington accommodation in Buckle Street Barracks. From there the new recruits moved to Trentham Military Camp. Describes departure from Wellington on transport ship 'Tofua' and sea journey to Aden. From there on to Suez and Zeitoun, and visits to Alexandria and Cairo. Jackson goes on to describe time on Lemnos Island, his joining of the machine gun section, and then transportation over to the Dardenelles with action at the front at Gallipoli, including descriptions of Hill 60. Return to Egypt, Alexandria, Cairo and camp at Heliopolis in December 1915. The diary is mostly written in graphite and purple pencil, with some annotations in ink. Title transcribed from item. Description: Postcards of Britain, Europe, Samoa, Tonga, and New Zealand Quantity: 1 album(s). Provenance: This album belonged to the Jack family. Margaret Laing (ca 1898-1959) who was June Stark's aunt and her Father's sister, married James Wilson Jack (ca 1887-1950s). It was through this marriage that the album came into June's family. James Jack's father was the Harbour Master at Tayport opposite Dundee, Scotland. He and his family came to New Zealand in 1887 for the sake of the health of his children (two daughters died of TB). Jack senior became a merchant in Wellington.
