Description: Lloyd Jenkin was born in Timaru in 1922. Recalls his early life and work there in the post office. Outlines work as a watersider in Timaru and explains how he became involved in the Watersider Workers Union (WWU) in Timaru. Recalls time as president of Timaru WWU over 25 years, spanning the 1951 Waterfront Strike and the Waterfront Industry Act. Outlines many health and safety issues for waterside workers and the union's role in solving some of these problems. Discusses relationship of Timaru WWU with the Wellington executive and other branches. Recalls time on executive of the South Island federation and the ten years he spent on the national executive. Discusses the bureau system of labour administration and the penalty system run by the unions. Describes the safety issues on the waterside in relation to new technology. Discusses WWU social activities and memebership. Discusses changes on the waterfront including the fading out of "seagulls" (casual workers). Discusses disputes with other unions, including the New Zealand Seafarers' Union, which was resolved by the New Zealand Federation of Labour (FOL). Recalls own time spent on the FOL, and the split in the federation. Discusses changes in attitudes towards unions. Explains own retirement and achievements.
