Drummond-Fish, George, 1876-1938

British watercolour artist of landscapes and portraits. Mentioned in Johnson and Greutzner's 'Dictionary of British artists 1880-1940' (Woodbridge, Suffolk, 1976) page 155. Also in 'Dictionary of Irish Artists, 20th century', by Theo Snoddy. Educated at Liverpool Scool of Art. Travelling scholarship to Paris, Brussels and Antwerp. As an officer in 6th Battalion, Royal Irish Rifles in WW1 served at Gallipoli. He sketched for military purposes until wounded. The National Army Museum holds military paintings by him. Lived in Dublin after WW 1 and later in Wales and Scotland. He exhibited at the RHA. The monthly Army list gives some details (see letter AT 13/19/1, 6 April 1995, and a copy in the Artists' file). No mention of Drummond Fish in the regimental history of the Royal Irish Rifles. Information on his first name and place of birth (Scotland) supplied by Mr Douglas Higgins of England, whose family had known the artist (see at13/14/1 12 October 2002 and copy in artists' file. Description: Shows an early morning scene in June/July 1915 looking across the crowded dugouts and bivvies of ANZAC Cove, while smoke rises from the breakfast fires. View from just outside General Birdwood's HQ dugout (bivvy in foreground with sloping roof), and shows some of his staff officers. The man seated with a pipe is a colonel in Birdwood's headquarters. Watson's Pier is the nearer double pier. The Casualty Clearing station on the shoreline at right is shown by the Red Cross flag. Looking south to Hell's Spit in background, with Plugge's Plateau at left, showing Godley's Terrace (housing Austrralian and New Zealand HQ) near the top of it just below the skyline. Factual details supplied by Chris Pugsley, prior to purchase. Horace Moore-Jones painted a similar scene in his 1915 Gallipoli sketches.
