Description: A collection of caricatures and drawings, mostly depicting New Zealand sportsmen who flourished in the 1940s and 1950s. Includes rugby All Blacks Billy Wallace and Stan Dean, a player whose surname is Drake and another unnamed. The speedway champions depicted are Harold Fairhurst, Percy Coleman and Rich Tunbridge. Cyclist and speedway manager Gerry Mathieson is also included. An elaborate illustration 'A Night at the Opera' depicts a Wellington performance of Puccini's Madame Butterfly and features singers Leo Piccioli, Aldo, Ferracuti, Mercedes Fortunati and Maria Huder, as well as the stage manager Bruno Nofri. Description: Gramophone catalogues from a variety of sources, including His Master's Voice, Zonophone, Columbia and others, mainly dating from between 1898 and 1912. Also includes a key to the 1948-1949 catalogue of records music (with contributions by HMV, Columbia, Parlophone and Decca companies, and a copy of 'Societies - complete list of subscription editions of recorded music', (undated, but from internal evidence probably ca 1948). Also two newspaper cuttings, one from the 'Christian Science Monitor' Boston, August 17 1946, reviewing the opera 'Lucretia', by Benjamin Britten, and an undated but earlier cutting on the death of Giacomo Puccini in 1924. Arrangement: The material has been divided into three folders, dealing with the correspondence, annotated catalogue and general catalogues and newspaper cuttings This material was originally donated by Brian Salkeld or his estate between 1988-1998. It was separated from the main unpublished collection and held in the NLNZ Music Room. It was returned to the Archive of New Zealand Music in December 2015. Quantity: 1 folder(s).
