Shamrock Hotel (Wellington, N.Z.)

Built in 1893. Hotel situated originally on the corner of Molesworth and Hawkestone streets, Thorndon. Served Thorndon's largely working-class Irish. Moved in October 1981 by developer Rex Nicholls to the corner of Tinakori Road and Harriett Street, Thorndon.

Description: Photographs of the Shamrock Hotel in Wellington being moved from Molesworth Street to Tinakori Road in October 1981. One taken by the Evening Post. Photographer(s) unidentified for the other images, perhaps also Evening Post. Images show the hotel up on blocks on Molesworth Street and the move up Hill Street to Tinakori Road, and the vacant site on Molesworth Street after the move. The images also show wide load vehicles, a truck labelled T R Parry Ltd building removal contractor, and a portrait of an unidentified man holding up a Maori pendant found at the site of the move. Accompanying information - A handwritten note to 'Beryl' from 'John Peacock' regarding the prints. The Shamrock, a Victorian pub, was built in 1893 at the corner of Molesworth and Hawkestone Streets, Thorndon, in 1893. In October 1981, the building was cut in half and moved to a new location on the corner of Tinakori Road and Harriett Street, (230 Tinakori Rd), Thorndon, by developer Rex Nicholls.
