Description: Reminiscences describing his family background from the time of his birth in Tasmania, his childhood, moving to Melbourne, first jobs and finally going to sea. He writes of the vessels he served on (listed under Name below), his shipboard companions, their various cargoes and ports of call and describes in detail daily routines on board and onshore. One of his voyages as an apprentice was on the `Water lily' to Rarotonga, Tahiti, Archew [Atiu], Penrhyn, Starbuck and Auckland, New Zealand. He visited most New Zealand ports on coastal traders and was also involved in trans-Tasman vessels. He concludes with descriptions of his family's settling in the Bay of Plenty region on a farm on the Rangitaiki River and later at Kopuriki. Describes conditions on ships and relationships between the crews. Recalls joining New Zealand Seafarers Union (NZSU) 26 October 1938, with reference to compulsory unionism and union book. Was elected to National Council in 1951. Left sea 1956 and elected Secretary Dunedin and South Island Branch. Reflects on the 1951 Waterfront Lockout. Recalls election as Dunedin NZSU president and later election as Secretary. Mentions: Jimmy Lynch, Bluey MacQuarrie, Frank Trainor, Dan Macleod, Bill Clark and Nestor Taylor.
