Green, Samuel Edwy, 1838-1935

Southland and Otago artist and farmer. (See `Southern people; a dictionary of Otago Southland biography', 1998 p 196). Painted in watercolours and was self-taught as an artist. Exhibited with the Otago Art Society, 1876-1880. Work held by Otago Early Settlers' Museum, Hocken Library, Alexander Turnbull Library and by descendants. The oldest of 8 children, he was born in Market Harborough Leicestershire. Sailed for Australia in 1858 in the Americana. Shipped to New Zealand in charge of horses for the New Zealand wars in 1861. Engaged in goldmining in Otago, 1861, then took up land in the Akatore district. Five other brothers came to New Zealand with him. Resident at Clutha Ferry 1866-1872; Waihola 1880-1885; Taieri Beach 1887-1888. Died at Taieri Mouth.

Description: Shows a substantial two-storied brick and plaster building with a turret. There are also smaller cottages and a cannon, a woman dressed in white, with a small white parasol, seated centre foreground. The trees depicted include a willow tree and a Norfolk Pine. Possibly an Australian scene painted prior to Green's arrival in New Zealand Previously described as possibly an Auckland or Waikato scene (where most New Zealand redoubts were located). However the distinctive large building shown is not known as a nineteenth century New Zealand building. Most likely to be New South Wales or Tasmania. Description: Shows a small cottage in the middle distance, at the corner of a field in rolling countryside. There is a cow in the right foreground, and haystacks to the left of the cottage. The area on the right is wooded. Note on verso identifies homestead as either Whelan's /Whalan's place, Taieri B[each] A Mrs Mary Whelan [sic in Wise's from 1890-1903; thereafter Whalan] farmed at Taieri beach from about 1890, according to Wise's directories. By 1909, Alex, Edward and John Whalan were also there. Mary Ellen Macdonald married Patrick (Peter) Whelan in 1860 and they farmed at Taieri. Edward Whalan was their son. Description: Shows a view of the town from the nearby fields, with the main road from Gore to the left, a side road, All Saints Anglican Church at the far right, and another church on the street at the left. There is a horse in the paddock at the right and a telegraph pole on a lean in the foreground. The town lies on relatively flat land with hills in the background. Thought to be Tapanui by the donor, 1 March 1985. The churches at right and left are similar to the churches in another privately owned work by S E Green entitled "Tapanui".
