Lot description from Spink Auction House: "1841 (20 July) entire letter from Joseph Newman, storekeeper of Auckland to Rev. Ebenezer Prout of the London Missionary Society. [...] Probably carried by the Porter to Sydney thence to Valparaiso by the Theresa and onwards to London by the Floreville". Refers to Newman's request to Prout to send a minister, and "gives a picture of a thriving and very active community with buildings going up and good wages paid to builders and labourers". Item includes transcription.
