Description

The shipboard journal is headed "A Journal kept by me, Thomas Rollason Rawbone, Passenger on board the Ship 'Steadfast', bound from England to Port Lyttelton Canterbury Settlement New Zealand". The the first entry is dated 26 February 1851.

The diary has no covering boards. There is some sewing thread still in place but it is quite loose. The last section of the diary is detached from the rest. Three sizes of paper were used for the diary.

Physical Description: Holograph dairy, no boards. 36.5 x 11 cm, 39.5 x 12 cm and 43 x 13.5 cm.

Processing information: The collection had extensive conservation treatment in May 2023. It had been housed in one folder. Following treatment the letters are in two folders and the diary is in a custom-made box.

This material is very fragile, please handle with care. Shows signs of water damage, ink bleed and other damage.
