Carte de visite photographic portrait of John Buchanan taken by J McGregor & Company photography studio circa 1885-1894. Shows John Buchanan seated in a chair and looking up at a transparent figure standing over him. The transparent figure is also John Buchanan, and the image of him has been imposed onto the photograph by the photographer, likely using double exposure techniques.
Mount verso includes a red printed seal for J McGregor & Company photography studio, including a commemoration of the 1865 New Zealand Exhibition at which J McGregor & Company was awarded a "First Class Certificate".
John Buchanan was a botanical illustrator who resided in Dunedin.
This carte de visite is an example of spirit photography, likely achieved through double exposure.
Spirit photography is thought to have been introduced in the early 1860s by American photographer William Mumler, using double exposure techniques. (Manseau, Peter.
