Otimai Lodge

Property and grounds situated near Oratia, Waitakere, Auckland. Otimai means "welcome, come and stay" and the lodge was the first Girl Guide Movement centre located in New Zealand. Donated in 1927 to the movement by the Wilson family due to Lucinda and Bertha Wilson’s connection with the movement. Lucinda Wilson was considered the founder of the Girl Guide Movement in New Zealand and served as the first chief commissioner for 12 years.

Property next door was purchased soon after 1927 and the Burgin Field campsite was established. Buildings were partially rebuilt and extended in 1979. Site comprises over 3 hectares with a lodge that sleeps 40, brownie/fairy ring, manager's cottage (originally owned by the Parkin family), chapel and the Burgin Field camping area.

During the 2000s and 2010s, Otimai Lodge was found to be operating at a loss. Accordingly, it was put up for sale in 2016. Due to resistance from the community and Wilson family descendants, the sale was halted. The buildings and part of the grounds were placed under long-term lease as a venue for corporate events and private special occasions; and the campgrounds were made available for hire from GirlGuiding New Zealand.
