Description

Manuscript map showing westerly voyages of John Byron in 1764, Samuel Wallis and Philip Cartaret in 1767, across the Pacific, executed in England, circa 1770.

The routes of the voyages are labelled "Commodore Byrons Track in 1764", "Capt. Wallis Track in 1767", "Capt. Carterets Track 1767".

Map coverage extends from the group of locations labelled as Admiralty Islands, New Hanover, Nova Hibernia, and Nova Britania to Faulkland Island. Other place names include Juan Fernando, C Pillar, C Provid., Cape Virgin Mary, Streights [sic] Magel., "Port Egmont discovered by Comr Byron 1764", Chili [Chile], Patagonia, and Per[u]. Also labels two different locations for Masa Fuero (now known as Alejandro Selkirk Island or Isla Más Afuera, a part of the Juan Fernández archipelago belonging to Chile): "Masa Fuero by Mr Bryon" and further east "Masa Fuero according to Capt. Carteret".
