Reports on their monitoring results of the endangered yellow-eyed penguin (Megadyptes antipodes), using a combination of intensive nest-searching and counts of transiting penguins on Enderby Island, Auckland Islands, over three years to establish the relationship between count numbers and breeding birds. Informs of the importance for conservation management of accurate long-term monitoring of a threatened species’ population size and trend. Makes recommendations for future population estimates.
