Provenance: These portraits of Polly Wheeler's ancestors were originally hung in the McMillan family home in Kōputaroa. They were rescued when the house burnt down.

Description: Framed studio portrait of Ihakara Tukumaru, Walter Lawrey Buller, and an unidentified Māori woman in circa 1870s. Photographer unidentified. The woman is likely related to Tukumaru, possibly his half-sister Pirihira or his wife Ema. She wears a hei tiki around her neck. Buller is seated on a chair and holding a tokotoko. Photograph dated based on the ages of the subjects (Tukumaru and Buller) as compared to an earlier dated photograph at PA2-2157. See PA9-133 where Karaitiana Te Ahu appears to be wearing the same hei tiki. Title supplied by Library. Pirihira Tukumaru, mother of Karaitiana Te Ahu McMillan, died in 1872, and is buried in Ihakara Gardens, Foxton. Quantity: 1 b&w original photographic print(s) hand-coloured.
