Description

Depicts a pair of cattle beasts, a bull and a cow, owned by the farmer and stock trader Donald McGregor Drummond, in Nelson around 1842.

Illustrates the beginning of cattle breeding in the Nelson district by European settlers associated with the New Zealand Company.

Attached to the backing is an inscription by Kenneth Mowat, nephew of Catherine Dummond, Donald Drummond's widow:

'This is a picture of the first cow and bull that was landed in Nelson, New Zealand about 1842. The painting was done by Major Heaphy, the cattle at the time were owned by Mr Donald Drummond.'

Another hand has written, in ballpoint pen, 'Pedigree from England'.
