- Description
Postcard shows a group of soldiers and civilians, and a man dressed in a Maori cloak, standing in the street in front of a parade float made to look like a military tank. In the background is the 3-storeyed Soldiers' Club building, and beside it the Manawatu Philosophical Society rooms.
The 'Manawatu standard' of 28 February 1918, page 6, reports "A car that attracted considerable attention was entered by the Western Grenadiers, and probably the only reason that it did not get a prize was because it was not "decorated" as required by the conditions of the competition. It was an excellent representation of a military tank, and as it rolled along a realistic touch was given bv the firing of miniature blank cartridges from guns in the rear of the vehicle".
The Soldiers' Club in the background was to be used later in the year as a temporary hospital for victims of influenza.
