Collection of circa 400 letters (written about every third day) and photographs from Dr James Roberts Boyd to Staff Nurse Hilda Lizzette Grubb, nee Faber, RN while he was serving in Egypt and Greece in World War Two, December 1940 to April 1945. Boyd addresses Hilda as 'Selina' in some letters. Also letters addressed to Mrs Faber, mother of Hilda.
Letters include anecdotes relating to his war work, involvement with key army and medical personnel, and photographs of people - doctors, nurses, army personnel - he worked with, and scenes such as his hut garden.
Also includes biographical research about Boyd and partial transcriptions of selected letters, compiled and transcribed by Rosemary Grace Marryatt. Includes pages with the original photographs sent by Dr Boyd, with their inscriptions transcribed from verso. Also includes photographic images of Boyd's World War One and World War Two medals (taken by donor before returning them to his family), and of the initialled leather case (JRB) in which Hilda Grubb originally kept the letters and photographs.

Hilda Lizzette Grubb, nee Faber, was a nurse in James Roberts Boyd's private medical practice in Wellington before World War Two. They later both served at No 1 General Hospital in Egypt and maintained a lifelong friendship.

Description: Comprises biographical notes on James Roberts Boyd and excerpts of his letters transcribed by Rosemary Grace Marryatt. Also military correspondence, historical photographs, newspaper clippings and ephemera relating to Boyd and modern photographic images of medals awarded to Boyd. The historical photographs from World War Two originally sent with the letters feature landscapes, portraits, and group portraits taken in Egypt, Greece, and Rome (Italy).
