Description

All scenes taken during the Waitangi Day land protests in 1982. Most show protesters, mostly young Māori and pākehā men and women, linking with arms high, holding placards. The placards include "Waitangi is a racist celebration", "The Treaty - nothing to celebrate, a fraud!", "Boycott Waitangi", "Not one more bloody acre", "Bastion Point is Māori land", "Lake Horowhenua is Māori land", and "Ake Ake Ake!". A long line of policemen is visible in the background (frames 1 to 5); the protesters are finally seen after dark marching across the Waitangi Bridge, led by a man with a megaphone (Frames 10 & 11). The final frame shows a close-up view of a young Māori boy. Unless otherwise stated, all persons are unidentified. Photographs taken by Ans Westra.
