Description

All views taken at Ratana during the annual celebration commemorating the birth of Tahupotiki Wiremu Ratana on January 25th. Several women and children are queuing outside a building (frame 1); several people are sitting in the sun outside a single-storeyed house (frames 2 to 4); a woman is tending graves in the Ratana cemetery (frame 5); several women are sitting on a ledge around a monument in the cemetery, one of whom is wearing the Whetū Mārama symbol on her dress (frames 5 to 11). In all these frames there are monumental gravestones visible in the background including the back view of a large angel with outspread wings; and in frame 12 a man is talking to two women, one of whom is wearing the dress of Anahera Pono (the faithful angels). Unless otherwise stated, all persons are unidentified. Photographs taken by Ans Westra.
