Description

All views taken at Ratana at the annual celebration commemorating the birth of Tahupotiki Wiremu Ratana on January 25th. Frame one is a close-up view of a Ratana apostle wearing a cassock with the Whetū Mārama symbol on the chest and a white collar; a church warden (Kaitiaki-Whakamoemiti) with the Wheū Mārama symbol of the star and moon (representing enlightenment through the Christian trinity te Matua, te Tama me te Wairua Tapu (the Father, Son and Holy Spirit), ngā Anahera Pono (the faithful angels) and the revelations of te Māngai (mouthpiece or prophet) on his cap (frame 2); a woman leaning over a fence with tents in the background (frame 4); a large crowd with Te Manuao in the background (frame 6); and views of young children and young men sitting outside (frames 7 to 12). Unless otherwise stated, all persons are unidentified. Photographs taken by Ans Westra.
