- Description
All frames taken at the opening of the Pipitea Marae on 31st May 1980. Frame one shows Sir Keith Holyoake (when he was Governor General) wearing a kahu kiwi (kiwi feather cloak) speaking to the crowd with a group of dignitaries seated behind; he is also seen watching proceedings (frame 3). Women are perfoming waiata ā ringa (action songs with poi at their waists in frames 2 & 3, and using their poi (frames 4 & 5)); and men are performing the haka behind a line of korowai (cloaks with twisted thrums) laid on the ground in a line (frames 6 to 12). Unless otherwise stated, all persons are unidentified. Photographs taken by Ans Westra.
