Description

Frames one to six taken on an open day in the grounds of Homewood, the residence of the British high commissioner in 1980. Previous images (AW-1960 to AW-1963) show a close link with Māori from the Ngāti Poneke Young Māori Club and in frames one to four a young Māori girl wearing a korowai (cloak) and tipare (head band) is standing at a table of Māori items including sculptures (frames 1 to 4). Also a young Māori boy beside her is holding a mere (stone weapon). A stone lion outside the front of the house is covered with ivy (frame 5). After the announcement in April 1980 that there would be a Springbok rugby tour to New Zealand in 1981 various anti-tour groups including HART (Halt All Racist Tours) started protesting (frames 7 to 12). The images were taken in the vicinity of the Hotel St George in Boulcott Street, Wellington with St Mary of the Angels Catholic church visible in the background in frame 10. One man (in frame 7) is holding up a newspaper article reading "Rugby Union AGM. 'Demonstrate 12 Noon, St. George. This Thursday April 17 [1980]'". The woman next to him (frames 7 & 10) has been identified as Marei Bollinger (later Marei Webster). Groups of people are holding placards which include "60-Shar-ville 76-Soweto 81- ?"; "Racism - Who cares - Tours bring $"; "Racism ruins rugby"; and "Sin Bin. Education petition" (held by a man identified as David Lowe). Unless otherwise stated, all persons are unidentified. Photographs taken by Ans Westra.
